Life is always governed by duality, and we all need a companion. 12^th house is the one the follows the ascendant or vice versa. Another philosophy is that we follow the 12^th as it the end result of the journey of life.

The 12^th house plays an important role in our lives, it is the house of faith, marriage, bed, sleeping, going away etc.

Marriage and children are one of the major objectives of human life. Marriage is not just a conjugal right, but it is far more than that. Marriage is the institution of faith, acceptance and love. That is why marriage in vedic astrology is seen from 12^th house, which is the house of faith, your bed & sleep and your follower for the rest of your life.

Upapada

The reflection of the house is called Pada. Every house has its “pada”. The word pada, means foot, where something is actually standing or seeming to stand. The pada of the house is a place where we will get the results of the house.
The manifestation of a house is from its pada.
Upapada is the pada of the 12^th house.

12^th house is marriage, spiritual path and direction of life path. Upapada is 12^th house’s reflection and manifests it. A person may get married or renunciate, it all depends on 12^th house, this result will be given by Upapada.

Upapada tell us about our marriage or serious relationships, which may or may not convert into marriage.
Upapada is the one who decides how your spouse is, what is the quality of your marriage or relationship, its duration and children.
Affliction to Upapada, also means blockage to get married or troubled relationships, fights, divorce, separation or cheating. We get a complete idea of person’s marriage or relationship through Upapada.

Calculation of Upapada Lagna.

The calculation of Upapada is very easy, simply count from 12^th house to the 12^th Lord. Now count as many houses from 12^th lord. The house where count ends is where your Upapada is. There are a few exceptions:

1. If 12th lord is in the 12^th house or the 6^th house, then Upapada will go to the 9^th house of the horoscope.
2. If the 12^th lord is in the 3^rd house and the 9^th house, then Upapada will go to the 3^rd house of the horoscope.

The house where Upapada is placed is called Upapada Lagna (UL).

Upapada Lagna

Upapada Lagna is denoted as UL. Upapada is treated as an ascendant for marriage and relationship purposes. This ascendant tells everything about marriage or serious relationships. The sign of UL, house where it is placed, planets with UL and UL lord, will clearly define the nature of spouse, quality of marriage or relationship and its duration.

The different things UL shows:-

1. Marriage & Serious Relationships.
2. The number of marriages or serious relationships a person may have.
3. Whether a relationship will convert to marriage or not.
4. The spouse, his/her qualities, looks, family, and nature.
5. Timing of marriage. Delays, denial and other problems in marriage.
6. Duration, good and bad events of marriage or relationship.
7. Sufferings or blessings in marriage or relationship.
8. Cheating or affairs in marriage or relationship.
9. Events that may end marriage or relationship.
10. Children born through marriage.
11. Timing of the end of marriage or relationship.

If Upapada Lagna has affliction it causes various problems in the relationship, like cheating or having multiple partners.

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Ji is the highest saint that the modern world has seen. He was a true sanyasi (renunciate). We see that UL in the 9 house, of Guru (Teacher). He was transformed by his Guru Shri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. UL is the manifestation of 12th house, here it manifested to get freedom from worldly chains. The UL lord Sun is Atma Karaka in Sagittarius, denoting a Sadhu (Saint) of the highest order. Here UL has not manifested for marriage but to follow true spirituality.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was married very early at age of 13 years. Here UL is 2^nd house showing an early relationship or marriage. Saturn conjoined UL also the spouse may be elder. Kasturba Gandhi was one year elder. They had a long marriage life as Sagittarius sustained the Upapada for long by blessing of the Guru. Since one of the UL lord Ketu, was in Marana Karaka Sthana, and in exchange with Saturn, which denotes health problems to the wife.

Salman Khan

Salman Khan is a very famous Bollywood Actor. He always have been in rumor for his relationships and considered as one of the most eligible bachlor in the country.
The UL is 3^rd house, in the sign of Gemini. UL in Gemini sign is not good as it denotes many partners, as Gemini is natural sign of mating in natural zodiac. Secondly UL has also conjoined Jupiter which is very good, denoting good looking partner but the catch is, that Jupiter is in 3^rd house, which is Marana Karaka Sthana for it, so Jupiter might not help to sustain the relationships.

We also see UL lord Mercury caught in Rahu Ketu axis and is in 8^th house. Mercury and Ketu Yoga is not good, and Mercury is afflicted, by Saturn’s aspect also. Planet in UL and UL lord both as afflicted by bad placement and melefic association. This shows a strong possibility of marriage denial.
Cancer is 2^nd from UL, also failing to sustain it as Moon is Aquarius is weak and it also conjoined Saturn. This shows there will be issues in relationship, and Saturn also represents ill fame, which might come due to relationship issue.

Bill Clinton the former US President was in the limelight for a scandalous relationship with his office staff and other women. The UL is Leo, with Sun in its own sign, denoting that his spouse will be strong and can also hold an office of power. Sun also represents government.

The 2^nd house from Upapada which shows breakage or disturbances in marriage, has malefic conjunction of Venus and Mars. Debilitated Venus, shows a women, Mars shows excessive sexuality. This shows marriage may break or be disturbed because of association with other women due to native’s excessive sexuality.
The marriage did not break as UL Lord Sun was very strong.
