The significance of Dhanteras is that we can achieve real wealth through the blessings of Shri Dhanvantri Bhagwan. This real wealth is good health & freedom from diseases. For Wealth, we worship Lord Shiva as Vitteshwara. In our tradition, we do not worship Kuber as he enslaves humans. Lord Shiva is the source of all wealth; without him, Lakshmi will not come.

Dhanvantri Pooja
- You have to light two diyas.
- One Diya will be 4 mukhi and of cow ghee. Place this diya on the left side of the Shiva Linga
- The second Diya will be 2 mukhi and mustard oil. Place this diya on the right side of the Shiva Linga
- Now do Pancha Upachar Pooja of Shiva Linga and chant the below mantra.
ॐ श्री धन्वन्तरे नमः।
om śrī dhanvantare namaḥ |
Chant 8 malas of this mantra to prevent diseases. Those who are suffering from chronic health issues must chant 14 malas.
Vitteshwara Pooja
Worshipping Lord Shiva as Vitteshwara increases income and wealth. It also helps to cut down on unnecessary expenses and ensure a stable flow of wealth.
ॐ नमः शिवाय नमः वित्तेश्वराय।
om namaḥ śivāya namaḥ vitteśvarāya |
Chant 11 malas of this mantra if you think your income is not sufficient and you have to earn more. If you want to cut down expenses and amass wealth the chant 21 malas
Buying Utensils
It is an old tradition to buy utensils on the day of Dhanteras. This ensures good health and appetite. The reason to buy utensils is to activate the Dhatu Rashis. It is a Tithi of Jupiter and he exalts in a Dhatu Rashi (Cancer). So the best metal (dhatu) for health is silver, the Jeeva (Jupiter) loves it.
Secondly, we can buy utensils of different metals based on the 2nd lord of our Horoscope. This ensures health and wealth. For example, my second lord is Venus, so I should buy silver utensils to eat in them.

- Agni Planets Sun and Mars – Copper.
- Jala Planets Moon and Venus – Silver
- Prithivi Planet Mercury – Earthen Ware
- Akash Planet Jupiter – Gold
- Vayu Planet Saturn – Steal or Iron.

Why 11 mala if the income is not sufficient? Also, can you explain the logic for 21 mala too.
I thought 5 mala(SMP) will bring in income. Thanks!
